Sergei Kharitonov Knocks Out Andrei Arlovski

by Michael David SmithKharitonov punches ArlovskiIn the first fight of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament, Sergei Kharitonov exposed Andrei Arlovski's glass chin, knocking him unconscious in the first round.

Although Arlovski's boxing looked crisp in the early going, it wasn't long before Kharitonov connected with a hard punch, and when he did, Arlovski was stunned. A few more hard punches and Arlovski was out cold, and it looked ugly to see Arlovski asleep on the canvas.

"I trained very hard and saw so many people around here from Russia," Kharitonov said, saluting the Russian fans who had come out to see him. "I was nervous because Andrei is a very, very tough fighter. I hope we will become friends after the fight because I respect him."

UFC NEWS: Kenny Florian wants top 145 lb. contender in June, then Jose Aldo in Brazil

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FlorianKenny_CG_150_42.jpg

Kenny Florian is set to make his featherweight debut this June, and he's got lofty goals for the division.

According to his manager Malki Kawa, in comments made to MMAWeekly.com, Florian hopes to get a top contender in his first bout in the division, and then hopes to make a quick turnaround for a potential fight with Champ Jose Aldo.

"A top contender. Whoever the No. 1 contender is at that point is the guy I'd like to get,? Kawa stated. "What would be my ideal situation for me is for him to get a fight in June, whoever the No. 1 contender is, win that fight, and then hopefully set something up for Brazil with [Jose] Aldo if the UFC's up for it."

Of course, Aldo needs to get past Mark Hominick on April 30, but if the UFC is up for it should Florian get a win in June, a Florian-Aldo title fight in Brazil at the end of August would be a very big fight for that card.

Penick's Analysis: We argued this last night on our Tuesday Livecast at BlogTalkRadio.com/MMATorch, and I'd be very intrigued to see Kenny Florian against Chad Mendes for a shot against Jose Aldo. Of course, Mendes could also just sit on the sidelines and be next in line, but if the UFC wants to build up their next challenger after Hominick, a win for Florian or Mendes in that fight would accomplish that. It would be a quick turnaround to get that title fight on the Brazil card, but it would make for a very entertaining Featherweight Title fight if it comes together.

UFC QUOTABLES: Lyoto Machida - "If I'm not pleasing the fans anymore, the UFC won't feel sorry for me"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MachidaLyoto_CG150_30.jpg

"The expectations are the best. We know Randy Couture is a great champion, a guy who helped to build the sport as it is, and it's a great pleasure to have this fight on my resume, because I'll be part of Randy Couture?s history on the sport. He added much to MMA. I believe we can win, we have many weapons. Despite he?s on a certain age, he's tough and experienced, and he's been fighting guys like Minotauro, and he did tough fights and he's tough for anyone...

Of course [a loss could lead to my release]. UFC considers the incomes a lot, the profits, and if I'm not pleasing the fans anymore, they won't feel sorry for me. That?s why I've always invested on me a lot, and it won't be any different now. If I did a lot, I'll do a lot more now. I'll give my best trying to win. If I have to bring the best professionals, I will."

-Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida talks to Tatame.com about his upcoming fight with Randy Couture at UFC 129 and the realization that a third straight loss or a poor performance could certainly lead to him being cut from the organization.

Penick's Analysis: I don't think the UFC would cut him with a loss to Couture, as despite it being three straight losses they will have all come against champions in the division. However, if he loses in a really boring fight, it's definitely a possibility. But after losing two straight fights, Machida should know he really needs to come out with an impressive fight at UFC 129 in front of 55,000 fans in attendance.

Throat Grab Technique Helped Antonio Silva Beat Fedor Emelianenko

by Michael David Smith

Two members of the first family of Brazilian jiu jitsu, Ryron Gracie and Rener Graice, have produced this excellent instructional video showing the jiu jitsu techniques that Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva used to dominate Fedor Emelianenko on the ground during the second round of Saturday night's fight.

The whole thing is worth watching, but it's especially interesting to hear the Gracie brothers comment on a technique that seems like something out of a street brawl but was in reality an intelligent, tactical mixed martial arts maneuver employed by Silva: Grabbing Fedor by the throat.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Andrei Arlovski's coach Greg Jackson doesn't think he has a glass chin, believes he's making fundamental mistakes in recent losses

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

AndreiArlovskiCRG_150_10.jpg

Andrei Arlovski has had a rough stretch over the last couple of years. After a five fight winning streak into his bout with Fedor Emelianenko in January in 2009, he's lost four fights in a row, three of which have come by knockout or TKO. But despite what has been a labeled a "glass chin" with his recent losses, Arlovski's new coach Greg Jackson doesn't buy into that talk.

"I think he?s going to come back a better fighter,? Jackson said in an interview with Sherdog.com. ?You have to remember I?m a diehard optimist. It?s really hard to discourage me or tell me it shouldn?t be done or it can?t be done. I?m a guy that I think I know what to do to fix it. I?m going to try everything I can to do that."

"He kind of hesitated standing in front of [Kharitonov] and was grabbing around the neck and doing stuff that we hadn?t planned. For me, that?s part of the learning process. It didn?t go our way because we made some fundamental mistakes that we weren?t supposed to make. Of course you don?t want to stand in front of Kharitonov no matter who you are. He?s got bombs in either of those hands of his. We were doing very, very well following the game plan and we kind of had a lapse."

For Jackson, he believes it's all about the fundamentals, and he believes Arlovski has been making a similar mistake in each of his recent losses.

"I'm really identifying the mistake. It went a little deeper than I thought it did,? Jackson said. "Identifying that mistake and changing what we do there is going to be a big, important factor. I don't think he has a weak chin. I think he's fighting in a heavyweight division where these guys would knock down a house if they hit it."

Penick's Analysis: While Jackson's take on the situation may be accurate, it doesn't change the fact that he's taken some ridiculously brutal losses over his career. The knockout he took against Kharitonov was scary, and the more beatings he takes the more likely he is to have problems later in life. I personally don't want to see him take any more punishment, the same way I didn't want to see Chuck Liddell take more punishment after his numerous knockout losses. It's sounding like he'll continue on fighting, and that is just a little disappointing.

Video analysis: Iole says Fedor's intimidation edge may be gone

Fedor Emelianenko is back on U.S. soil. He helps kicks of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix this Saturday (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT).

Fedor, who had a 10-year unbeaten streak snapped last June, faces 6-foot-4, 265-pound Antonio Silva. The Russian is a heavy favorite to win the fight and a favorite to win the tournament. But the gap between the legendary fighter and the rest of the field isn't what it used to be. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about Fedor in 2011.

UFC and GSP cautioning fans, don't look past Shields

The Canadian media was excited to finally see the UFC officially land in Toronto. Dana White and Georges St. Pierre were on hand to push the Apr. 30 card at Rogers Centre. The slate is loaded with Jose Aldo and up to 42,000 may pack the giant stadium. Plus there's going to be cool innovations, like eight massive viewing screens for the fans. And oh yeah, Jake Shields will be there too.

With the talk around swirling about a potential superfight between UFC welterweight champ GSP and middleweight champ Anderson Silva, the welterweight title challenger is an afterthought for many right now. So when the questions about GSP-Silva starting flowing forth at the UFC 129 press conference, the fighter and promoter both said "hold your horses."

"You put me on the spot, now," (St. Pierre) said with a laugh, according to the Canadian Press (VIDEO). "I'm not sure, I don't even know what's going to happen after this fight (with Shields). I'm taking one thing at a time."

White went into sales mode, talking about Shield's win over Dan Henderson and his unbeaten streak dating back to 2005.

"This guy's so stealth it's unbelievable," White said. "But that's how (Shield's) been his whole career."

St. Pierre got full of himself when he first won the UFC title back in 2006. There's was talk of him being unbeatable. He listened and had to learned a lesson.

"This thing for me, I take it (Silva talk) like a distraction from my fight. My immediate goal is to win against Jake Shields," said St. Pierre. "I made a mistake in the past, looking past an opponent. And I'm never going to do it again, because last time I did that I got beat by Matt Serra."

Let him get this win, against one of the top grapplers in MMA, out of the way first.

"For me it would be foolish to look past Jake Shields," he added. "I don't know what's going to happen. Maybe it's going to happen or maybe it's not going to happen -- this super-fight. I will see. . . It's too complicated to say. We'll need to wait until after Jake Shields to talk about it."

Both fighters raved about Silva's win over Belfort. Shields (26-4-1, 1-0 UFC) said Silva's front kick KO was par for the course from the champ. St. Pierre called him a "true mixed martial artist."

STRIKEFORCE QUOTABLES: Gilbert Melendez - "I really truly believe I'm the No. 1 fighter in the world"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_93.png

"There's a couple of things to weigh out with Strikeforce. Strikeforce is a great organization, and they've taken care of me really well. Everyone knows the UFC is the biggest organization out there, branding yourself and getting your name out there, it's no secret that they're the best. There wasn't much to weigh out. These agreements are structured for a champion not easily to walk away, but there was things to debate about with Strikeforce here and there.

But at the end of the day I came to the conclusion that it was a great deal on the table and they showed how much I mean to the organization. At the end of the day I'm pretty happy with my deal and yes I'm getting taken care of pretty well

I think it's important for me to dominate now. I really truly believe I'm the No. 1 fighter in the world, and the only way I'm going to get that spot is by dominating. I can't have these draws or get knocked down or almost lose, I need to completely dominate everyone out there. I think I'm ready to do that. I'm going to try to make a statement, and that's how I'm going to do it."

-Gilbert Melendez talks to MMAWeekly.com about why he re-signed with Strikeforce and what he plans to do to keep himself in the conversation as the best lightweight in the world.

Penick's Analysis: Melendez currently holds the mantle as the "best lightweight not in the UFC," (although Eddie Alvarez and Bellator might argue otherwise), but despite his belief that he's the best in the world he won't have an opportunity to prove that in Strikeforce. There are plenty of entertaining and exciting fights for him to have in Strikeforce and in Japan, and he should do just what he says he wants to in dominating most of them. But he's still not facing the best competition in the division. Not by a long shot, and though it's a cliche sometimes to be the best you do need to beat the best. That holds true very much in this lightweight division that is so stacked with talent, because the UFC's roster, especially at the top, is constantly being matched up against elite talent. Melendez is an elite level fighter, and he very well could beat some of the top guys in the UFC, but until he's facing that level of competition on a regular basis no one outside of his camp and Strikeforce is going to think of him as the #1 lightweight in the world.

UFC 126: Silva front kick puts Belfort out in the first round

Add another highlight to Anderson Silva's knockout reel. The UFC's middleweight champ waited for Vitor Belfort to relax for a split second and then delivered a vicious front kick to the challenger's chin. Belfort, drilled by the ball of Silva's foot, went down hard. He was helpless on the ground, where Silva landed two more punches before referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in to stop the bout at 3:25 of the first round.

Silva has won 14 straight fights and 13 in a row in the UFC. In an era of amazing balance and growing competition in mixed martial arts, Silva hasn't lost a fight since 2006. He's also been successful in eight straight title fights. That's a UFC record.

"This was a kick that I trained a lot," Silva said through his translator/manager Ed Soares. "Vitor is a guy with very quick hands and great boxing skills. I practiced this kick a lot and it just happened to work out."

Update: Silva got the Knockout of the Night bonus, good for $75,000.

Dana White, who's had issues with some of Silva's antics in the past in the Octagon, was wowed by the finish.

"I think he’s the best fighter in the world, and when he does what he’s capable of doing, you have a night like tonight," the UFC president said. "I've only seen that in a video game."

The lead-up to the fight got nastier as the week went along. One of the biggest fights in the history of Brazil, the fighters were polite to each other during the prefight press conference on Wednesday. On Thursday, Belfort suggested Silva was a phony and tries to intimidate opponents with his games in the Octagon. Silva (28-4, 13-0 UFC) lost his cool during the weigh-ins when he wore a mask and nearly started a brawl. The champ promised that Belfort would pay for his criticism of his behavior. Silva explained during the postfight that he was also annoyed that a friend was challenging him.

"I'm part of a team, part of a family," Silva said during the UFC 126 postfight press conference. "We have a code of honor at Team Nogueira that we would never fight each other. I've trained with Vitor a lot. I helped him for a lot of fights and Vitor's helped me for a lot of fights. He chose his path and that was the path he chose."

The fight unfolded in typical Silva fashion. The champ is a classic counter-striker. If the opponent doesn't engage early, Silva starts to clown him. Silva wasn't too demonstrative tonight, but he did begin to a dance a little and twirl his hands.

Belfort (19-9, 8-5 UFC) had a little success early when he caught a Silva head kick and pushed him to the ground with two minutes left in the round. Silva popped right back up. Belfort began to let his hands go, but was missing badly on most attempts. When it reset in the middle of the cage, Belfort relaxed at the wrong moment and got nailed by that front kick.

Belfort, 33, is one of the old-timers in UFC. He made his debut at UFC 13 at the age of 19. He eventually won the UFC heavyweight and the light heavyweight titles. He struggled with injuries and motivational issues in his late 20's. Viewing him as a guy who would bring the fight to Silva at middleweight, Dana White brought Belfort on board. He made his return to the promotion at UFC 103 with a win over Rich Franklin.  With both battling injuries, attempts to match the two fighters during 2010 fell through on several occasions.

Silva could be matched up next against Chael Sonnen again some time in 2011. Sonnen faced Silva at UFC 117 and was leading four rounds to zip entering the final round before he got caught in a triangle choke.

Currently, Sonnen is serving a promotion-imposed suspension. Sonnen accepted a plea deal to federal money laundering charges in January. His sentencing is scheduled for March. He's also finishing up a six-month steroid-related suspension in California.

On Wednesday, White mentioned that it may be time for Silva to face Georges St. Pierre, the UFC's welterweight champion. GSP is scheduled to defend his title at UFC 129 in Toronto in April. If he gets by Jake Shields, the road is clear for a Silva-GSP champion vs. champion superfight.
